If you've followed me for a while, you know me as a triathlon guy. But over the last couple of years I went all in on HYROX, and I qualified for the World Championships in my first two attempts. Two for two. I was making massive improvements and I was hungry heading into that second one.
Then, right after qualifying, I had a blood clot. A blood clot is not something you train through. It's something you respect. I still went to Worlds, and as I've shared before, I was not my best there. To say the least.
Since then I've been working my way back, and I made the exact mistake I would warn any of my athletes about. I tried to come back to everything at once. Triathlon fitness, HYROX fitness, riding, lifting, all of it, during one of the hottest summers anywhere. And on top of that, I'm doing more in person coaching than I ever have. I love it, it might be my favorite part of this job, but those hours used to be training hours, and no amount of wishing gives them back.
So I finally took my own coaching advice. You can do everything you want. Maybe just not all at the same time. The question stopped being how do I train more, and became how do I make the best use of the time I actually have. After a lot of thought, I've picked my top goal, and I've decided how the rest of my goals will stack up behind it as my comeback.
Over the next several weeks I'm going to walk you through exactly what I chose and why. If you're juggling a comeback, a career, a family, and goals that don't all fit in the same calendar, this series is for you.
